The Forest Way (Sustrans route 21)
The Forest Way runs along a dis-used railway line between East Grinstead and Groombridge just to the Southwest of Tunbridge Wells. This marvellous trail skirts the edge of the Medway river in this area of outstanding natural beauty and passes the village Hartfield along the way (the old home of AA Milne). This is countryside that inspired Winnie the Pooh. A great family day out, the route is off-road and pretty flat. There are picnic benches to be found along the route as well a great pubs in Groombridge, Hartfield and Forest Row to explore. We have partnered with three wonderful venues along the route where you can just turn up and hire our bikes using the App. Alternatively if you want to travel to the area and hire bikes for the day, we can arrange to deliver and collect bikes to East Grinstead station or Eridge station. Forest Way bike hire has never been so easy. We offer bike hire from East Grinstead, bike hire from Forest Row, bike hire from Hartfield, bike hire from Groombridge and bike hire from Eridge…just take your pick and take time to explore the area.

Spa Valley Railway platform – bike hire from Groombridge
The Spa Valley Railway runs Steam and other vintage trains between Tunbridge Wells and Eridge. This station along the route is ideal for picking up the start of the Forest Way. Simply pick up the bikes, ride a short way through the village (perhaps picking up some supplies from the local shops) and head on off up the trail. You can access the bikes on the platform any time regardless of whether the trains are running. Groombridge bike hire is made easy with Countrybike.
The Anchor Inn – bike hire from Hartfield
This is a great pub found in Hartfield about halfway along the route between Groombridge and Forest Row. Hartfield was the home of AA Milne of Winnie the Pooh fame. The village also has a village shop, farm shop and a Winnie the Pooh shop and cafe. You are a short cycle ride from the pub through the village to where you join the trail. Hartfield hire is made easy with Countrybike.
Tablehurst Farm – bike hire from Forest Row
Tablehurst Farm is a wonderful community owned farm in Forest Row. It has a great farm shop and cafe where the bikes are located and is a short ride along the lane to the farm that joins directly onto the trail. Forest Row bike hire is made easy with Countrybike.
Other venues nearby
These are venues in the area which we have bikes located although may be a little distance from the route. You are able to connect through to the route via country lanes which we have carefully chosen to recommend although we recommend you are comfortable with cycling on country lanes if planning to do so.
The Nevill Crest & Gun – bike hire from Eridge
This is a fabulous pub set on the hill above Eridge station, you can access Sustrans route 21 by walking your bike down the hill for a few hundred yards before crossing the main road (we do not recommend cycling on the A road outside the pub). From here the Sustrans route runs downhill and off road to Eridge station before joining a small lane along to Groombridge where you can join the Forest Way. It is a pretty route and we have done it many times and have spotted wild deer on more than one occasion. Eridge bike hire is made easy with Countrybike.
